The actor was born on February 27, 1965, in New York as a son of a Jewish family with Konstanz as the mother and André Emmerich as a father. While his mother is a concert pianist, his father earned his living as a gallery owner and art dealer. Perhaps Emmerich would have been born in Germany if his father had not fled with his family because of the unrest in the country. The family first stayed in Amsterdam, Netherlands, before settling in New York in 1940.

Noah Emmerich has brothers who are not movie stars, but who are doing well in their chosen career. Toby Emmerich is president and chief operating officer at New Line Cinema and also a screenwriter. Adam Emmerich, on the other hand, is a partner at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz in New York. He also specializes in mergers and acquisitions.

Noah Emmerich received his early education at Dalton School and graduated in history from Yale University with a degree in history. As a teenager, he began to build himself up for the entertainment industry when he learned to play the trumpet and privately studied Meisner acting techniques under the guidance of Ron Stetson, an actor/director.

The actor later started his acting career in the movie Beautiful Girls, which was critically acclaimed. He has been married twice. In his first marriage, he was married to the actress Melissa Fitzgerald. Their union lasted from 1998 to 2003 and it was not until 2014 that Emmerich walked down the aisle again with actress and producer Mary Regency Boies.
