US-born basketball player Mitchell Robinson joined the New York Knicks of the NBA after the NBA Draft 2018. Unlike most NBA Drafts, the talented youngster took a peculiar path in his professional career, for which he received broad media attention. After abruptly ending a possible college career at Western Kentucky University, Robinson made history as the first recruit to prepare for the NBA Draft on his own initiative after spending the entire 2017-18 season without playing for a college, pro, or high school/postgraduate team.

Mitchell Robinson’s Bio, Age

Mitchell Robinson was born on April 1, 1998, in Pensacola, Florida. He completed the first two years of his high school education at the Pine Forest High School in Pensacola, Florida. He then transferred to Landry-Walker College and Career Preparatory High School in New Orleans for his second year. However, since he is relatively new to basketball, he did not accomplish much in those early years.

Robinson eventually transferred to Chalmette High School, where he experienced the peak of his basketball career in high school. He led the school’s basketball team, the Owls, to their first playoff victory in nearly 20 years. Throughout the junior season, he averaged 20.9 points, 13.6 rebounds, 8.1 blocked shots, and 2 steals per game, a performance that earned him honors for the entire district, the entire Metro, and all states.

The talented youngster showed similar performance in his senior year when he averaged 25.7 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 6 blocked shots per game. He led his school to the first regular championship in a regular season in two decades and the first district title in 21 years. For his outstanding achievements, he received the All-USA-Louisiana First Team Award and was also honored by The Advocate as All-District, All-Metro, All-State, and All-Metro Player of the Year.

Robinson was represented at both the Jordan Brand Classic and McDonald’s All-American editions in 2017, making him the first Chalmette player to appear in the latter.

College Career

By the end of his high school career, Mitchell Robinson was considered a consensus 5-star recruit and was also ranked in the top 10 in the 2017 class. For his college basketball career, he initially signed up for Texas A&M University in 2015, but after the departure of coach Rick Stansbury, he broke off his commitment and moved to Western Kentucky University, where his coach had changed.

In July 2017, Robinson spent two weeks training with the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers men’s basketball team before leaving for a planned team trip to Costa Rica. However, he reportedly left school and left the team before the trip abroad. This earned him an indefinite suspension from the team, and after consultations with head coach Rick Stansbury, Robinson was dismissed from the team.

Hoping to receive a transfer, Robinson attended several colleges in August 2017, including Louisiana State University, the University of Kansas, and the University of New Orleans. Without making any progress, he returned to Western Kentucky University on August 27. On September 18, 2017, the talented youngster announced his decision to give up his college career and instead use the entire 2017-18 season full-time for training for the 2018 NBA Draft.

On June 21, 2018, Mitchell Robinson’s hard work paid off, as he was ranked 36th by the New York Knicks in the second round of the 2018 NBA Draft, and he and the team participated in the 2018 Summer League in Las Vegas, where he performed superbly.

Salary

Following the 2018 NBA Draft, Mitchelle Robinson signed a $4.8 million 3-year contract with the New York Knicks. This contract puts his average base salary at $1.6 million per year. Although the third year of the contract is not fully guaranteed, it includes an option for a fourth year for the team.
