If someone’s portfolio says “actress, author, neuroscientist”, then you know that they are a bundle of talents right away. Mayim Bialik has managed to find himself in this elite category of multi-talented people. She has acted in roles, web series, films, and television series as a voiceover artist. She is best known for her regular participation as the character Amy Farrah Fowler – also a neuroscientist – in the highly successful CBS series The Big Bang Theory. This role has earned her four nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series. For her work on the series, she also won a Critic’s Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
In fact, this role was so successful that Mayim had to decline the prestigious honor of lighting the Independence Day Torch in Isreal because it contradicted her shooting schedule for the series.
Mayim Bialik’s Biography
The actress and neuroscientist were born on 12 December 1975 as Mayim Chaya Bialik in San Diego, California. Mayim, whose name means “water”, has a Polish, Czech and Hungarian heritage and is Jewish. Her parents are Barry and Beverly Bialik.
She attended Walter Reed Middle School, after which she attended North Hollywood High School. By this time she was already a child actress and had acted in films and television roles of the ’80s like Pumpkinhead, Webster, Blossom, Beauty and Evil, and The Beast and The Facts of Life.
After her high school education in 1995, she received admission offers from UCLA, Yale, and Harvard. A certain back and forth followed before she chose the University of California because she didn’t want to be far away from her family. Her time at UCLA gave her a Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience with minors in Hebrew and Jewish Studies. Bialik took a break in 2005 to focus on her acting but returned in 2007 to pursue a Ph.D. in Neuroscience.
Bialik’s last leading role before 1995 was in Woody Allen’s 1994 comedy Don’t Drink The Water, and she spent most of the next decade as a narrator for cartoons such as Jonny Bravo, Kim Possible, Hey Arnold! and Recess. Guest appearances in series like “Saving Grace”, “Kalamazoo” and “Fat Actress” followed. Since 2008 she was the school’s guidance counselor on ABC’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager.
Mayim Bialik brought her academic interests to the table when she was cast in the third season finale of the highly successful “The Big Bang Theory”. Her character in the sitcom is Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler, a neurobiologist. Malik Bialiks went from a recurring role to the lead role in the 8th episode of season four. For her work on the series, she was nominated for an Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for four consecutive years (2012 – 2015).
On 6 March 2012 Bialik published her parents’ book entitled Beyond the Sling: A Real-Life Guide to Raising Confident, Loving Children the Attachment Parenting Way. She has also written and co-written several other books. In 2015 she appeared in the movie The Flight Before Christmas.
In August 2015, she founded GrokNation, an online platform that brings people together from all over the world to talk about current issues in society. In the midst of the scandal of Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assaults, Mayim Bialik published an op-ed in the New York Times in which she spoke about how society had become largely immodest and how women were constantly objectified and exploited by the entertainment industry for profit.
Her Family: Kids and her ex-husband Michael Stone
Bialik’s marriage lasted about nine years. On August 31, 2003, she married a man named Michael Stone. Mayim, who had grown up as a Mormon but converted to Judaism, included some traditional customs of a Jewish wedding in her ceremony with a Victorian theme.
Her marriage produced two children. The first, Miles, was born in 2003 and the second, Frederick, was born in 2008. 2010 saw her end her career as a research professor and return to acting to spend more time raising her children. In November 2012, Michael Stone and Mayim Bialik took time out of their marriage.
Bialik may not belong to the elite category of highly deserving Hollywood names, but she can’t complain too much. She has earned a good income with her abundance of speaking roles, comedies, films, and series, especially with the big bang theory. According to Celebrity Net Worth, she receives a payment of 450,000 dollars per episode of the comedy series. The website also puts her net worth at 25 million dollars.
