Matt Schaub is a professional American football player who plays the quarterback position for the National Football League’s Atlanta Falcons. He was drafted by the Falcons from the University of Virginia during the 2004 NFL draft. He has played football as a professional for other NFL teams including the Baltimore Ravens, the Oakland Raiders, and the Houston Texans. Matthew Rutledge Schaub was born on June 25, 1981, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Dale Shaub and his wife Debbie Schaub. He grew up in West Chester, where he attended West Chester East High School, Pennsylvania. During high school, Matt was a three-sport star; he played in basketball as well as football and baseball. After his high school career, he went to the University of Virginia where he played college football with the Virginia Cavaliers.

He retired in his first year of college in 1999 and joined the team the following year. Matt didn’t get much playing time as he played alongside Dan Ellis and Bryson Spinner. At one point, when Dan Ellis was absent due to injury, Matt and Spinner got almost the same amount of time because they played alternately. He ended the 2001 season with a record of 10 touchdowns, eight receptions, and 1,524 passing yards.

The following year he transferred to the University of Richmond where he continued his college career. There he recorded his breakout season in 2002, in which he finished with 28 touchdowns, seven interceptions, and 2,976 passing yards. He was named ACC Offensive Player of the Year and ACC Player of the Year in 2002. He was also named to the All-State Virginia team. In his senior year, he scored 18 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, and 2,952 passing yards. He won the MVP of the Continental Tire Bowl in 2003 and was appointed to the All-ACC academic soccer team. He received the John Acree Memorial Trophy and the Ben Wilson Award from the University of Virginia.

Professional Career

Matt Schaub was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons as the 90th overall pick in the third round of the 2004 NFL draft. He was drafted the same year along with Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger. In the Falcons, he played as a replacement for Michael Vick, who only played six games for the team in the 2004 season. The following season he won the MVP after an impressive performance in the pre-season game of the American Bowl in Tokyo, Japan. This season he scored a touchdown, 208 passes, and two interceptions.

Schaub moved to the Houston Texans in 2007 and 2008 in exchange for second-round tips. Upon arrival, he was named Texans’ first quarterback and played seven seasons with the Texans, ending his career with them in 2013. After leaving the Texans, he signed with the Oakland Raiders in 2014 and was released in March 2015. He also signed a two-year $2 million contract with the Baltimore Ravens. His 2015 season was shortened by a chest injury and he ended it with the Ravens at the end of the season.

In 2016, Matt Schaub moved to the Atlanta Falcons, where he signed a $2.75 million annual contract. In the 2016 season, he was named Matt Ryan’s reserve quarterback; he played in four games with 16 passing yards.
