The talented player started his professional career as a teenager with Dinamo Zagreb in his home country Croatia, where he won 2 consecutive league titles. Kovacic later had a season with the Italian team Inter Milan, after which he moved to Real Madrid.
Although he was only given a limited season, Mateo Kovacic’s time with Real Madrid is considered his most successful in his club career to date, having won three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles with the club. Kovacic made his international debut for the Croatian national team in 2013 and represented the country at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Euro 2016 and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Mateo Kovacic’s Bio
Mateo Kovacic was born on 6 May 1994 in Linz, Austria. Both his parents are Bosnian Croats who immigrated from Kotor Varoš in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The young Kovacic started playing football at a rather tender age with LASK Linz, a club of the Austrian Football Association in his hometown Linz. Already in 2007, the 13-year-old Kovacic caught the eye of the scouts of many top European teams. On the advice of his parents, however, he decided to join the Croatian serial champion Dinamo Zagreb.
In Zagreb, Mateo Kovacic spent three seasons (an injury-related stint) with the club’s youth teams before being appointed to the senior national team in October 2010. At his league debut on 20 November 2010, at the age of 16 years and 198 days, Kovacic made history as the youngest scorer in the league’s history when he scored the team’s fourth goal in the 6-0 win over Hrvatski Dragovoljac. Thanks to the contributions of Kovacic, the team won two consecutive league titles, two Croatian Cup titles and reached the group stage of the Champions League 2011-12 for the first time in 12 years. Kovacic was honored with the title of Croatian Football Hope of the Year in December 2011.
After a brilliant 2012 with Dinamo Zagreb, Mateo Kovacic moved to Italian Serie A giants Inter Milan, a transfer that came as a shock to several spectators. Kovacic showed impressive form in their three seasons with Inter, even though they didn’t win any trophies. In August 2015, UEFA Fair Play Rules (FFP) forced Inter Milan to sell Mateo Kovacic to Spanish La Liga giants Real Madrid. In its debut season (2015-16), Kovacic, under former Real coach Rafael Benítez, received a regular season with a total of 34 appearances.
However, his season became rare after coach Zinedine Zidane took office in early 2016. Kovacic only appeared eight times in the victorious 2015-16 Champions League campaign and started part-time in the 2016-17 doubles in the La Liga/UEFA Champions League. Kovacic received even shorter playing time as he made six appearances in Real Madrid’s 2017-18 Champions League campaign, in which the club won its 13th Champions League title.
On an international level, Mateo Kovacic made his debut for the Croatian national team in a U-14 friendly match against Slovakia. The talented youngster also represented Croatia in U-15, U-17, U-19, and U-21. Kovacic finally received his first appointment to the senior national team in August 2012.
The talented player took part in Croatia’s qualifying matches for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and was also part of the squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals. After a less impressive performance at Euro 2016, Croatia qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup from Kovacic, where they reached the final of a FIFA World Cup for the first time in Moscow and finally lost 4-2 to eventual winners France.
