Laurel Hubbard became a woman in 2012. She used hormone medication to help her transition. Later that year, she participated for the first time in international weightlifting. She became the first trans woman to win the international weight lighting at the Australian International & Australian Open in Melbourne. Despite meeting all of the eligibility and standards to compete, her victory created controversy in the media and on television, which she claimed was unfair to other participants. She qualified for the Commonwealth Games later that year. Her elbow injury, however, prompted her to withdraw from the tournament while she was a leading member of the field. Laurel Hubbard declared her retirement from weightlifting following her accident. She earned two gold medals in the 2019 Pacific Games and made her come back with weightlifting.

Many individuals, however, condemned her choice to make a comeback. Following that, she earned the gold medal for the country at the Rome 2020 world cup event with +87 Kg lifting in 2020. In domestic competition, she forced her to hold the position of weight lifter in 300kg. But, at the age of 23, she abruptly ended her weight-lifting career in 2001. She said that it had become too much for her to take. It was tough for her to integrate into a world that was not designed for people like her. After starting her transition in 2012, several possibilities opened for her to return to weightlifting as a job for the rest of her life. Later that year, after nearly 16 years, she made her Olympic debut in weightlifting.
