Kayla was the first all-state honoree and most valuable player during all four seasons of her high school career, having led the team to Nationals seven times and breaking records almost immediately in her freshman year. In her junior and senior years, she was awarded Oregon 4A Player of the Year, and ESPN Rise ranked her the number one record-breaker.

She graduated from high school in 2010 and enrolled at the University of Alabama. As an outfielder for the Crimson Tide, she was a member of the college team. In her first year, Kayla was named SEC Freshman of the Year and was one of the top ten nominees for USA Player of the Year. In her sophomore year, she was named to the Capital One Academic All-America softball team and an NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete on several occasions for her season performance.
