Popularly known as J-Hey by his friends, right-fielder Jason Alias Heyward was born in Ridgewood, New Jersey on August 9, 1989. Nonetheless, he grew up in the Atlanta area alongside his brother.

While his parents, Eugene and Laura Heyward, were not necessarily athletes, the family was no stranger to the sport like his uncle, Kenny Washington was once a basketball player and coach. Even more, since Jason and his younger brother Jacob Heyward both showed love and talent for the game, their father supported them from the beginning by driving them to training grounds and competitions.

Because he was an excellent player in his school days, he already had a number of full scholarships waiting for him when he finished high school. Although he was interested in the Georgia Institute of Technology and Clemson University, he decided to go pro because there were several teams that wanted his signature.

After turning down all offers to colleges including the University of California, Los Angeles, he signed a contract with the Atlanta Braves, who placed him 14th in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft, which was the beginning of his career that led him to the Minor League at the age of 17. He played for the Gulf Coast League Braves, the Danville Braves, as well as Rome, Myrtle Beach, and the Mississippi Braves.
