Among the many actors who started acting before they could speak, John Francis Daley has since expanded his craft beyond acting into other areas such as screenwriting. He is also a film director, producer and has some heroic deeds as a musician.
However, most people would easily remember him playing the role of Sam Weir in the NBC comedy-drama Freaks and Geeks, as well as one of his acclaimed roles as Lance Sweets, an FBI criminal profiler in the series Bones, in which he appeared in 138 episodes from 2007 to 2014. For his outstanding performance in the former, John Francis Daley was awarded a nomination for a PRISM Award in 2014.
To his right as a musician, Daley plays keyboards and also lends his vocals to the band Day player.
Born on July 20, 1985, as the son of the actor R.F. Daley (father) and Nancy Daley (mother), who plays and teaches piano, it is not surprising that Daley became interested in the arts at a very young age. In his middle school in Nyack New York, he played the role of Danny in the school play of Grease.
While he was born in Wheeling, Illinois, Daley grew up in New York. His father and mother are of Irish Catholic and Jewish descent respectively.
John Francis Daley has been in the business since 1998. He made his first appearance as Young Tommy in the Broadway hit The Who’s Tommy. From 1999 to 2000 he portrayed the role of Sam Weir in the television series Freaks and Geeks. He is also credited with television series such as The Geena Davis Show, Boston Public, Bones, Judging Amy, Spin City, and many others.
In other aspects of his career in the entertainment industry, Daley co-directed a short film What Babies Do in 2001. He also wrote and starred in the short comedy Friday Night and co-wrote an episode of Bones (in which he starred) alongside his writing partner Jonathan Goldstein. Daley’s character in the Fox drama series Bones was killed to give the actor some time to concentrate on directing the film.
Together with his writing partner, Daley wrote the black comedy Horrible Bosses in 2011, and in 2013 they reunited to write The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. That same year, they were hired to write Call of the Wild for DreamWorks Studios.
Together, the talented duo also wrote and directed the movie Vacation 2015, starring Ed Helms and Christina Applegate. Along with four other screenwriters who joined their team, Daley and Goldstein wrote the screenplay for the 2017 film Spider-Man: Homecoming, which received rave reviews and became a commercial success. Daley and his partner Jonathan Goldstein would have directed the film, but Jon Watts was later hired for the job. Nevertheless, they have directed several films and are still in the process of making more.
While Daley hasn’t paid much attention to his musical abilities, he has appeared in Abandoned Pools’ music video for “Mercy Kiss”. He also appeared at an earlier stage in his career, being ranked 94th in VH1’s top 100 teenage stars.
