After his birth, he was left with his grandparents. He was sent to the Julliard School of Music because his grandfather saw that he could sing well. In 1958, Morris graduated from Julliard University, and after graduation, he immersed himself in full-time singing. He worked with the Black Arts Repertory Theatre/School in Harlem, and there he sang with Albert Ayler, Amiri Baraka, Sun Ra, and Sonia Sanchez. In 1992 he portrayed Stan Winters in Martin. The series lasted three years. Morris was removed from the series when he was shot dead in 1994 by a man who tried to rob him.
