The fame of the “Back to the Future” franchise has much to do with the brilliance of Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, who played the roles of Marty McFly and Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown, respectively. Interestingly, Lloyd declined the role and only played it at his wife’s urging and while reading the script.
The American film of 1985 (Back to the Future) was a science fiction movie, which was shot with a budget of 19 million dollars. The film was a huge success with a gross box office of $389.1 million. The great success and the great acceptance led to the production of a sequel, “Back to the Future II” in 1987. This also gained wide recognition, although not as much as the original film. Back to the Future III was released the following year.
This trilogy led to a franchise that includes animated television series, a musical performance, and a series of video games, soundtracks, theme park attractions, a comic book series, and also some published books. Below are the facts about the man who played Dr. Emmett in the trilogy.
Christopher Lloyd Bio
Christopher was born the son of a lawyer named Samuel R. Lloyd Jr. and a singer named Ruth Lapham. His mother was the sister of Roger Lapham, the 32nd Mayor of San Francisco, and the daughter of Lewis Henry Lapham, a successful American entrepreneur and co-founder of the Texaco Oil Company. She was born in 1896 and died at the age of 88.
Christopher Lloyd’s date of birth is recorded as of October 22, 1938. Born in Stamford, Connecticut, he grew up with his six older siblings (four girls and two boys) in New Canaan, Connecticut. One of his brothers, Samuel Llyod (III), was also an actor in the mid-20th century. Samuel died in 2017 at the age of 91. His son, (Christopher’s nephew) Samuel Lloyd IV, is also an actor.
Christopher had a passion for acting and completed internships in summer theaters in Hyannis, Massachusetts, and Mount Kisco, New York. At 19, he enrolled in several acting classes and made his theater debut on a New York stage in 1961 in a production of And They Put Handcuffs on the Flowers. He made his Broadway debut in 1969 in Red, White, and Maddox. He then played several roles outside Broadway, including A Midsummer Nights Dream, The Seagull, In the Boom Boom Boom Room, King Lear, and Happy End, to name a few.
The comedy-drama film of 1975, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, was his first film appearance. For his portrayal of Reverend Jim Ignatowski in Taxi, a situation comedy, he twice won the prize as an outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series of the Primetime Emmy Awards. He is also popularly known as Doc Brown, a character he portrayed in the Back to the Future trilogy (and franchise). Christophers’ trademark in the film industry is the play of eccentric characters.
Lloyd’s recent works include Going in Style (2017), Muse (2017), The Sound (2017), Boundaries (2018), Welcome to Pine Grove (2018), 12 Monkeys (2017- 2018), and Roseanne (2018). In his over 57-year acting career, he has received a number of awards and has been nominated for several others. These include the Obie Award, the Drama Desk Award, the Independent Spirit Awards, the Daytime Emmy Awards, the British Independent Film Awards, the Golden Raspberry Awards, and the National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers Award in various categories and in various years.
Christopher Lloyd’s Spouse
The handsome 1.80 m tall actor married Catharine Dallas Dixon Boyd on June 6, 1959, but they were divorced after 12 years (1971). His marriage with his third wife, Carol Ann Vanek, was short-lived and lasted only 3 years (1988-1991).
For another 13 years, Christopher Lloyd remained married to Jane Walker Wood, a screenwriter (1992-2005). Previously, he and Jane had bought a house in Montecito, California, which he put on the list when they divorced. But then, unfortunately, it was torn down by the tea fire in November 2008. His last wife to date (2018) is an estate agent named Lisa Loiacono, whom he married in November 2016.
What’s His Net Worth?
Various sources claim that this eighty-year-old actor has net assets of $50 million, $70 million, $100 million, and so on. Although these figures are feasible given his 57-year successful acting career and his films that have grossed over a billion dollars, the exact value of his net worth is not really known.
Is He Dead or Alive?
Christopher is alive and healthy. He recently celebrated his 80th birthday on October 22, 2018, and all the news of his death has turned out to be fake.
Interestingly, his birthday on October 22 correlates with the day of his return to the future, which was first celebrated in 2015.
