Aubrey Christina Plaza was born on 26 June 1984 in Wilmington, Delaware. She was named after the single “Aubrey”, released in 1972 by the pop-rock band Bread. Her father is originally from Puerto Rico and her mother is half English and half Irish.

Her mother Bernadette is a lawyer and her father David Plaza worked as a financial consultant. She grew up with two younger sisters named Renee and Natalie. Her family was a very committed Roman Catholic family.

Plaza received her primary and secondary education at the Ursuline Academy in Wilmington, Delaware. She then became President of the Student Council of her school and graduated in 2002. She gained her early acting experience in the theatre productions of the Wilmington Drama League in her home parish. In 2002 she received the Lions Club Wilmington Teen of the Year award.

Prior to officially launching her professional acting career, Aubrey Plaza completed an internship with a number of media companies, including the NBC Page program. As NBC Page, she appeared on a number of TV shows, including the sketch comedy show 30 Rock (2006). She also did an internship in the art department of the NBC late-night show Saturday Night Live. She later studied at the prestigious Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.
